Strengthening New Zealand's Supply Chain Through Shared Heritage and Scale.
Mainstream New Zealand is proud to announce that we have signed an agreement to acquire the transport, containers, and logistics operations of PBT. It’s a bold strategic move, where Mainstream’s momentum continues as we take on a highly respected major freight operator who has been a staple in the market for over 50 years.
The acquisition brings together two proudly New Zealand-built businesses that have grown from modest beginnings into nationwide networks with strong reputations for service, performance, and operational excellence. With roots going back more than five decades, PBT’s journey from a small transport operator to a nationwide freight provider closely mirrors Mainstream’s own path, built on freight know how, relentless customer focus, and people who care about getting the job done right.
When considering broadening our express freight market share it was only logical that we’d acquire the business that we hold the greatest respect for. Both companies are well regarded nationwide for operational excellence, and we share a similar history, each starting out as a family business with a passion for freight.
We believe PBT’s people and contractors will welcome the return to that kind of culture, where shared values and long-term commitment matter.
This move is as much about strategic positioning, as it is about securing a more certain future for staff, contractors, and customers of PBT who we are equally proud and excited to welcome into our family led business.
We’ve had a lot of respect for PBT over the years. Like us, they’ve built their business from the ground up with hands-on freight people who, with a commitment to service, have grown a top-tier nationwide network. There are plenty of similarities in how we both operate, which gives us real confidence that bringing the two businesses together will be a relatively smooth integration.
With the addition of PBT, Mainstream expands its capability across express freight, container transport, warehousing, and global forwarding. Reinforcing its position as one of New Zealand’s largest and fastest-growing logistics providers. Backed by aligned values, strong leadership, and a shared operational philosophy, the business is well-positioned to set a new standard in freight service.
There is a strong focus on integration planning and stability across operations. Customers can expect continuity in service, relationships, and support, with no immediate changes to account contacts or services. Integration is already underway and is expected to be fully complete by 1 September 2025.
For existing customers, the Mainstream service you know and rely on remains unchanged. Our people are ready to support you with any questions, and we look forward to continuing to connect your business and freight whether that’s across town, across the country, or across the world.
